Connecticut Museum of Culture and History:
A New Name for One of the Oldest Historical Societies in the Nation
Connecticut Historical Society Enters New Era – Announces New Name and Refreshed Branding
Hartford, CT – (June 22, 2023) – After nearly 200 years, the state’s official historical society today unveiled its new name and visual identity: Connecticut Historical Society enters a new era as Connecticut Museum of Culture and History (CMCH). The new name reflects the organization’s mission to both explore the rich history of Connecticut and its impact on the nation and the world today.
The new logo – strategically designed using a set of stylized brackets to artfully frame Connecticut – symbolizes the unique experience visitors will have at the Museum; a focused experience that brings to life the events and storylines that shape the state’s culture and history, and its role in the United States and the world. Additionally, the new logo, in its simplicity, is a more modern look representing the Museum’s mission – to cultivate a deep understanding of the history and culture of Connecticut, and its role in the United States and the world, through reflection of the past, active engagement with the present, and innovation for the future through our collections, research, educational programs, and exhibitions.
“With an extraordinary legacy of nearly two centuries, we are excited to look forward to the next two hundred years,” said Connecticut Museum of Culture and History Executive Director and CEO Robert Kret. “The museum has been a significant cultural force and reference point here in the state, and the new name only reinforces our commitment to remain relevant to our present-day audience while staying true to our mission and institutional integrity.”
Under this new name and brand, the museum will continue to offer a diverse range of collaborative, interactive exhibitions, educational programs, and world-class collections as part of its experience.
“This is a significant milestone for the Museum,” adds Deputy Executive Director & Chief Strategy Officer Ilene Frank. “The new name and logo are a significant representation of who we are as the go-to-destination for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of Connecticut’s culture and history. We are excited to begin this new chapter while also strengthening our commitment to present the inclusive and diverse stories of the people who have helped shape Connecticut’s history.”
“A visit to the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History is more than just historic document, images and artifacts,” adds Kret, “it’s also about discovery and dialogue. This is the first major step into the future.”
This summer, the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will feature a variety of exciting events and exhibitions including its annual free outdoor concert series featuring cultural music from across the state, a documentary film project showcasing BIPOC farmers across Connecticut, a traveling Smithsonian exhibition which highlights the history and culture of Latinos in baseball, plus many others.
