This is America: A Visual Expedition by Carol M. Highsmith

The CMCH welcomes photographer Carol M. Highsmith on March 9 to provide a unique detailed account of her experiences photographing Connecticut and the United States. For 35 years, Carol M. Highsmith, the woman often saluted as “America’s Photographer,” has produced memorable images of life and places across the United States on behalf of our esteemed Library of Congress. There, her collection of 30,000 images is ranked alongside those of historical luminaries including Mathew Brady and Dorothea Lange.  As part of a state-by-state project of a lifetime, Highsmith has explored Connecticut and will describe how her carefully preserved photographs depict 21st-Century America and our state. Highsmith’s exhibition, Connecticut Captured: A 21st Century Look at an American Classic, will be on view and shows the diversity of Connecticut: its charming rolling roads and Colonial villages; its rich maritime heritage; its ubiquitous house museums; and the vestiges of the state’s industrial might and bustling railroads in cities throughout the state.
