Panel Discussion: Choreographer Alwin Nikolais, A Touchstone for Creativity

World-renowned choreographer, composer, designer, multi-media pioneer, and Hartford area native, Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993), created ground-breaking work that continues to inspire far-reaching audiences, novices and experts alike.

In this panel discussion, “Alwin Nikolais: A Touchstone for Creativity,” two veteran Nikolais collaborators, Ruth Grauert, co-founder and director of Bearnstow, and Phyllis Lamhut, founder of the Phyllis Lamhut Dance Company, will be joined by historian Steve Thornton in a discussion to be moderated by Peter Kyle (dancer, choreographer, and Assistant Professor of Theater and Dance, Trinity College). The aim is to celebrate the creative excellence Alwin Nikolais espoused in his life’s work, to gain insight into what Hartford in the 1930s-1940s offered this singular young artist at the outset of what became a career of international renown, and see how Nikolais’ example might resonate for our city and region today.
