** SOLD OUT!**
CHS Members, join us for a guided tour of the West End home of legendary Wadsworth Atheneum curator A. Everett “Chick” Austin, followed by lunch. Austin was director of the Atheneum from 1927 to 1944, an innovator who introduced modern art to the museum. The house, a National Historic Landmark, is modelled on a 16th-century Venetian Villa, and unusual for being only 18 ft deep. At the home, Austin and his wife Helen entertained artist Salvador Dali, dancer Martha Graham, and writer Gertrude Stein. Today, the house is owned and operated by the Wadsworth Atheneum.
The tour begins at 11:00 at the Austin House at 130 Scarborough Street in Hartford. Afterward, we will enjoy lunch nearby.
This tour includes same-day admission to the Wadsworth Atheneum. Space is limited; advance registration is required! You can sign up by calling 860-236-5621, ext. 289. Questions? Contact Natalie Belanger, Adult Programs Manager, at natalie_belanger@chs.org.
$35 for CMCH members, free with subscription for members of the Decorative Arts Council.
Please note that the Austin house is not wheel-chair accessible.
