Speak Up co-founder, 23-time Moth StorySLAM and GrandSLAM champion, and 18-year public school teacher Matthew Dicks will be teaching a storytelling workshop for tweens and teens ages 11-17 that will provide a solid foundation in the understanding and effective crafting of stories. Whether participants want to improve their public speaking and presentation skills, hone their job or college interview, or simply learn to tell a better, more interesting story on the page or the stage, this workshop might be for them.
Included in this workshop will be:
A behind-the-scenes tour of objects from the CMCH collection relating to childhood, teenage culture, and growing up moments for inspiration before participants start working on their stories
Methods for generating ideas for stories from your life experiences (you have more stories than you realize!)
Framing an effective story
The importance of stakes in storytelling
The permissible lies in storytelling
The 17 Most Important Rules of Storytelling
In addition to the modeling of stories, direct instruction, and interactive components, participants will be invited to (but not required to) develop a story of their own that will be presented to the class for critique.
$45 for CMCH members, $50 for non-members. Pre-registration required. REGISTER ONLINE HERE.
