CCHAP Summer Concert Series: Jason “Panman” Roseman & The Tropical Gems

The second concert in our 6th annual summer concert series is Trinidad steelpan presented by Jason Roseman & The Tropical Gems.

This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawn. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM, and music is from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium.

Jason Roseman grew up in Trinidad surrounded by steel pan instruments and music. His father was a master steel drum builder and steel band leader, and taught Jason how to play as well as make the instruments from an early age. As a master instrument-maker and musician, Jason is deeply invested in teaching steelpan in his community, and is a teacher to individual musicians as well as local steelpan ensembles.

As a performer and composer on steelpan, Jason embraces many different styles, including Trinidadian calypso, as well as Afro-Cuban, pop, and jazz, with emphasis on music that lends itself to improvisation. He has released several albums, including International Gems (2004), Steel Drum Planet (2007), Tell It All (2019), and Deep In It (2019). Together with his three-piece band, Jason showcases the tradition and dynamism of steelpan performance.

The 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series is presented by the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP), the state’s folk and traditional arts initiative, which seeks to document, present, and sustain cultural heritage arts and practices in the state and beyond. The concert series is generously supported by the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Trust Fund, Bank of America N.A., Trustee, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.
