CCHAP Summer Concert Series: The Undaunted Professor Harp

The third concert in our 6th annual summer concert series is blues music, presented by Professor Harp.

This concert will take place on the beautiful CMCH lawns at 1 Elizabeth St., Hartford. Grounds are open for seating and picnicking from 5 PM, and the music from 6PM – 7PM. All of the CMCH outdoor concerts are free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and food, and a food truck will be available onsite. In case of rain, the concerts will move indoors to our auditorium.

These concerts will also be live streamed via CMCH social media.

Hugh Holmes, Jr., is a New England-born specialist in Texas-style blues, alternating between harmonica and fervent vocals. He developed his playing style alongside many great blues artists. R&B icon Solomon Burke called him “Professor Harmonica Holmes” and blues legend Muddy Waters dubbed him “The Professional of the Harp.” Accepting both names, he became Professor Harp.

Professor Harp exemplifies dynamism within the blues tradition. He can be found performing throughout New England with his backup of guitar, bass, and drums. His music and life reflect his dedication to his craft and his heritage, and he defines “roots music” as not just limited to the past, but fully engaged in the present, and the songs are a vehicle for calling attention to injustice.

The 2021 season of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History’s outdoor concert series is presented by the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program (CCHAP), the state’s folk and traditional arts initiative, which seeks to document, present, and sustain cultural heritage arts and practices in the state and beyond.
